West Nile virus found in B.C. mosquitoes

“The West Nile virus has been found in B.C. for the first time, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
Mosquitoes collected in a trap in B.C’s south Okanagan have tested positive for the virus, officials said. The centre is also investigating possible cases of the virus in two Kelowna residents who had travelled in the south Okanagan region.
“These cases are unusual. We have had 40 people in B.C. so far who have tested positive for the West Nile virus, but all of them had travelled outside the province, so this is the first time that we have confirmed activity actually in B.C.” said Dr. Bonnie Henry…..”

FIRST HUMAN WEST NILE VIRUS CASE IN B.C. CONFIRMED

“VICTORIA – British Columbia has confirmed its first indigenous human case of West Nile virus infection, and laboratory tests are underway to determine if another person has been infected as well.
“The confirmed case is a Kelowna resident and the suspected second case lives in the same household. Both people had travelled within the central and south Okanagan areas and reported being bitten by mosquitoes,” said Dr. Paul Hasselback, medical health officer with the Interior Health Authority. “Last week, a mosquito pool sample collected from the south Okanagan tested positive for West Nile virus, and this week two more mosquito pool samples from the South Okanagan have tested positive….”
All previously recorded cases of West Nile virus in B.C. have been travel-related, acquired outside the province. B.C. has been anticipating the arrival of West Nile virus for several years, given its spread across Canada and the United States….”

Test results confirm Kelowna resident has B.C.’s first case of West Nile virus

“KELOWNA, B.C. – The Interior Health Authority says test results have confirmed that a Kelowna resident has contracted British Columbia’s first case of West Nile virus.
Medical health officer Dr. Paul Hasselback says a second person who lives in the same household may also be infected but lab tests have not yet been completed in that case.
He says both people had reported being bitten by mosquitoes while travelling in the south and central Okanagan areas….”
